Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The government of Yogyakarta city, in collaboration with the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN), inaugurated a school for seniors in Kotagede sub-district on Tuesday.

"There will be many activities that older adults can do while they are at the school. It is hoped that older adults, especially in Pubayan village, Kotagede sub-district can become residents who are strong and productive," Vice Mayor of Yogyakarta, Heroe Poerwadi, remarked at the inauguration of the school here on Tuesday.

The local Delima 123 Elderly Family Development (BKL) group will directly manage the school, he noted.

"The activities will not only be focused on maintaining health and fitness but also other aspects, such as mental and spiritual development and education and skills," he explained.

Poerwadi assured that activities carried out at the school will bring benefits. He then appealed to older adults not to hesitate to join the school built especially for them.

He also said he hoped that the school's activities would inspire BKL groups in other regions to set up similar schools.

"It is even hoped that new BKL groups will emerge so that efforts to realize healthy and productive older adults in Yogyakarta can be carried out more optimally," he remarked.

Meanwhile, Yogyakarta BKKBN head Shodiqin said that the school for seniors has been developed like other common schools and it even has a curriculum.

"The activities are like counseling, but they are based on a well-organized curriculum," he informed.

At Delima 123 BKL, ten meetings will be held with a schedule prepared directly by the BKL management, he said.

"Some of the materials that will be given include how to maintain fitness, health, and emotions. The hope is that the older adults will remain healthy, happy, and take good care of themselves," he added,

Shodiqin then asked older adults who have attended school to mentor others.
