Jakarta (ANTARA) - Muhammadiyah, Indonesia's largest Muslim organization after the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), is planning to increase the number of beds available at its hospitals across the country to cope with an exponential rise in COVID-19 cases.

"The Muhammadiyah-Aisyiyah Hospital (RSMA) network is preparing for increasing our hospital beds," head of Muhammadiyah's COVID-19 Command Center (MCCC), Agus Syamsudin, informed in a statement released here on Wednesday.

Indonesia reported 64,718 daily cases on Wednesday, its biggest single-day jump in coronavirus infections, according to data released by the government's COVID-19 Task Force.

The figure exceeded the peak of daily cases on July 15, 2021, during the infection wave triggered by the Delta variant in Indonesia.

During last year's Delta wave, Indonesia recorded the highest single-day jump at 56,757 cases, the task force revealed.

Syamsudin said the exponential surge in COVID-19 cases must be responded to promptly by providing all necessary measures, including increasing the number of hospital beds and medical personnel in the RSMA network.

The MCCC would also like to urge people to keep complying with the government's health protocols and unvaccinated residents to get vaccinated without further ado, he added.

"We will continue our vaccination program across Indonesia," he informed.

As of 12 noon on Wednesday, Indonesia's total confirmed COVID-19 cases stood at 4,966,046, according to the government's COVID-19 Task Force. The coronavirus emerged in the archipelago in March 2020.

West Java, Jakarta, East Java, Banten, and Central Java contributed the most cases on Wednesday, the task force said.

The number of daily confirmed cases in West Java was recorded at 15,196 while Jakarta, East Java, Banten, and Central Java reported 12,388, 7,919, 6,798, and 4,991 cases, respectively.

Meanwhile, daily recoveries increased by 25,386, taking the total recoveries since the start of the pandemic in Indonesia to 4,375,234.

The task force also reported 167 new deaths on Wednesday, which brought the total COVID-19 death toll to 145,622.

To curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country, Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) appealed to all citizens to keep calm and remain disciplined in implementing the health protocols.

He also urged people to reduce unnecessary activities in the midst of the ongoing Omicron surge.
