"Specifically for the digital sector, we seek an inclusive, empowering, and sustainable digital ecosystem,” Communication and Informatics Ministry’s Secretary General Mira Tayyiba noted during the Sofa Talk Series online event on Friday.
Tayyiba, concurrently the chair of the G20 DEWG in 2022, noted that digital literacy and competency are being prioritized by Indonesia at the G20 DEWG forum.
Digital literacy and competency are important for the people in order to become skilled in the digital space. In addition, the people can behave aptly and protect themselves while in there.
"There are many fraud cases where people pretend to be someone they are not in the digital space," she explained.
"Literacy here means that we should have the understanding and knowledge on how to protect ourselves and our personal data," she affirmed.
Once people have digital literacy and competency, they are expected to be able to utilize digital technology for productive activities that yield additional value.
"We can use them once we understand the ethics and the basic security to protect ourselves. At the end, it is expected to produce something with additional value," she remarked.

The ministry has presented a variety of programs in an attempt to expand digital literacy and competency to the broader public.
In addition to basic-level training through the Digital Literacy National Movement, the ministry has the Digital Talent Scholarship (DTS) Program for medium-level digital competency and Digital Leadership Academy (DLA) for advanced-level competency.
Digital literacy and competency are among the topics brought up by the DEWG in addition to connectivity and post-COVID-19 recovery as well as cross-border data flows.
