Purwokerto (ANTARA) - The G20 forum is the right platform for discussing the climate change issue comprehensively, given its broad and massive impact on the quality of human life, an expert on hydrology and water resources has said.

“The climate change issue needs to be discussed thoroughly through a number of discussions at the G20 forum since the impact of the issue is very broad, including the economic impact and the impact on the quality of human life," Yanto, Ph.D., from Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed) Purwokerto, said here on Monday.

The G20 Presidency has provided Indonesia the right opportunity to encourage a thorough discussion on climate change and evaluate climate change mitigation actions that have been carried out so far, the lecturer at the university’s Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, added.

The G20 forum, he said, has two tracks. The finance track focuses on financial issues and the sherpa track focuses on other broader issues, he noted.

"I think the climate change issue can be discussed thoroughly, both through finance and sherpa discussions, given that the handling of climate change issues also needs to be supported by funding," he said.

A thorough discussion of climate at the forum is crucial as its impact on the financial sector is very large, Yanto explained.

Indonesia's Presidency of the G20 would be maximized if it is used to encourage comprehensive dialogue on issues such as floods, droughts, and other climate disasters, he opined.

"Extreme climate change issue and its impacts such as floods, droughts, and other disasters need to be discussed in the Sherpa Track forum to balance climate change actions among the G20 participating countries," he said.

Indonesia is holding the G20 Presidency for the first time. It assumed the Presidency on December 1, 2021, and will hand it over at the Summit later this year.

Thus, for one year, Indonesia will lead the international forum that is an important part of the world community. Indonesia's Presidency of the forum is an honor as well as a historic event for the entire nation, according to officials.
