"This is a war between the superpowers, while Ukraine is (suffering) a collateral damage," Matta noted in a statement here on Thursday.
The senior politician, former president of the Justice Prosperous Party (PKS), made the statement while speaking during a discussion on "The Russia vs Ukraine war. What is the impact on the world geopolitical map?" organized by the new political party on Wednesday.
If a superpower goes to war, then there are no more rules and no one can regulate it and the United Nations (UN), including the UN Security Council, will become dysfunctional, according to Matta.
Sooner or later Indonesia could be dragged into the war and have to face the impact of it, for which he urged Indonesia to take precautionary measures, as the war will approach a bigger explosion point.
Matta noted that the world was currently moving toward the establishment of a new world order in the midst of prolonged crises, ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic to the Russia-Ukraine war, which could lead to a global protracted conflict.
"Hence, we are now awaiting a new world order. This is what we are worried about. This is what will happen. The winner will determine the rules. This is a direction of the world that is occurring," he noted.
Establishment of the new world order would be different from the old world order formed by the victors of World War II.
According to Matta, the formation of a new world order will be determined by the rational process of global society, as the world is increasingly integrated.
"However, can we arrive at a less bloody new world order? This is the direction we want," he remarked.
Matta, former deputy speaker of the Indonesian Parliament, suggested that in the midst of this global conflict, Indonesia has built a new power based on a free and active policy as initiated by the founders of the Indonesian nation.
He believed that the war between Russia and Ukraine could be a momentum for Indonesia to create a new historical road map for the world.
"We are facing a protracted conflict that will weaken all countries. The war between Russia and Ukraine is like a gong sound saying, 'Goodbye to the Old World Order and Welcome to the New World Order,'" he affirmed.
Matta expressed optimism that Indonesia would play a role in determining the new world order, specifically as a major world power after the collapse of the superpowers later.
The discussion, held online, featured international legal expert Hikmahanto Juwana, former Indonesian Ambassador to Australia and China Imron Cotan, and former Indonesian Ambassador to Ukraine Yuddy Chrisnandi.
