This effort is necessary because of Indonesia's condition that is prone to disasters. The potential of more victims and the loss of residences is very large.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Speaker Lestari Moerdijat has urged the government and related stakeholders to improve disaster recovery efforts in Indonesia so victims’ suffering is not prolonged.

"Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, and volcanic eruptions, which affect the residents’ home should be our collective consideration," she said in a press statement issued on Friday.

According to Moerdijat, such efforts can be undertaken at the central and regional levels by formulating a formal disaster impact recovery mechanism.

This is so that on field relocation or recovery can be done immediately after a disaster strikes, she said.

Integrated recovery management is also necessary for handling the impact of natural disasters so that the affected residents can conduct their activities as before the disaster and become more productive, she noted.

Integrated disaster mitigation is necessary as a form of prevention, she said.

It is necessary to raise people’s awareness about the threat of disasters, and spatial planning in each region can curb the number of fatalities during disasters, she explained.

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency's (BNPB) data, from January 1 to February 24, 2022, the number of fatalities due to natural disasters stood at 25, while 1 person was reported missing, 1,071 million people were evacuated, and 106 left injured.

The figures reflect victims of floods, extreme weather, tidal waves, abrasions, and earthquakes, he added.

Meanwhile, the number of properties declared to be affected or destroyed due to disasters has reached 14,262 houses, she informed.

"It has been two months since 2022 began, and more than one million people had to be evacuated due to natural disasters and more than 14 thousand houses ruined," Moerdijat noted.

To this end, she underlined that the effort to recover from disasters should receive serious attention from stakeholders, both at the central and regional levels.

"This effort is necessary because of Indonesia's condition that is prone to disasters. The potential of more victims and the loss of residences is very large," she added.
