the pandemic demands flexibility, so the National Education System Law must be able to adapt to future crisis situations
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) encourages the synchronization of regulations stipulating the education system through the revision of Law Number 20 of 2003 on the National Education System.

KSP Main Expert Staff Agung Hardjono noted in a written statement received here on Thursday that the law in place since 19 years should be revised so as to adapt to new challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The revision of the National Education System Law can provide (an opportunity) for each region to aspire to fulfil its needs and accommodate different learning contexts. Moreover, the pandemic demands flexibility, so the National Education System Law must be able to adapt to future crisis situations," he affirmed.

According to Hardjono, the revision was expected to offer freedom to educational institutions to develop their curriculum according to the development of the students as per the age and abilities.

Moreover, some items in the regulation are no longer relevant in the context of the current developments in the teaching and learning process, such as the obligation of teachers to conduct face-to-face teaching activities for 24 hours per week, since information technology has been applied in the current system.

Currently, the Indonesian education system is set on the basis of three different laws: Law No. 20 of 2003 on the National Education System, Law No. 14 of 2005 on Teachers and Lecturers, and Law No. 12 of 2012 on Higher Education. According to the Office, this could create inconsistency and overlapping, especially in its derivative regulations.

To this end, the revision of the National Education System Law will integrate these three laws into one dynamic education system in accordance with the 1945 Constitution.

The revision of the National Education System Law has been included in the 2020-2024 Mid-Term National Legislation Program. However, it has not been included in the 2022 Prolegnas priority shortlist.

Hardjono ensured that the government will take into account the people's aspirations during the discussion on revision of the National Education System Law. The Presidential Staff Office, which was in charge of managing strategic issues and overseeing the control of national priority programs, was committed to ensuring transparency in the progress in revision.
