However, the high level of satisfaction with President Jokowi's performance cannot be used as a means of justification to extend the president's term of office by postponing the 2024 general electionsJakarta (ANTARA) - A survey conducted by Lembaga Survei Jakarta (LSJ) in February 2022 found that 71.2 percent of the respondents rejected the postponement of the 2024 general elections and the extension of presidential term.
"Based on the results of a survey conducted by LSJ, some 71.2 percent of the respondents disagreed with the proposal for the postponement of the 2024 general elections and the extension of President Jokowi's term of office for whatever reasons," LSJ researcher Fetra Ardianto noted in a written statement released on Monday.
Ardianto remarked that only 18.6 percent of the respondents favored the postponement while 10.2 percent abstained.
The survey also showed 67.4 percent of the respondents were satisfied with the performance of the government under the leadership of President Joko Widodo.
"However, the high level of satisfaction with President Jokowi's performance cannot be used as a means of justification to extend the president's term of office by postponing the 2024 general elections as proposed by (Golkar Party Chief) Airlangga Hartarto, (National Awakening Party Chief) Muhaimin Iskandar, and (National Mandate Party Chief) Zulkifli Hasan," he remarked.
He highlighted several reasons behind the general public's refusal of the proposal for the postponement of the 2024 general elections and the extension of presidential term.
First, the proposal is against the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia.
Second, the postponement of 2024 general elections and the extension of presidential term may incite social unrest as it occurred at the end of former president Soeharto's leadership in 1998.
Third, postponement of the 2024 general elections and extension of the presidential term may ruin the legacy and reputation of President Jokowi in the eyes of the public.

Fourth, postponement of the 2024 general elections and extension of the presidential term may hamper the periodic national leadership circulation that has become a national agreement in the wake of reform movement.
The survey was conducted on 1,225 respondents in 34 provinces across Indonesia from February 18 to 28, 2022, through multi-stage random sampling.
The LSJ survey's margin of error is +/- 2.8 percent, with a confidence level of 95 percent. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews with respondents by using questionnaires.
