Indonesia's leadership of the 2022 G20 is essential to increase the involvement of cities in supporting the fulfillment of rights and adequate infrastructure for children
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Secretary of the Directorate General of Regional Administration of the Ministry of Home Affairs Indra Gunawan has urged all regional governments to improve children's quality of life through the G20 Presidency.

"Indonesia's leadership of the 2022 G20 is essential to increase the involvement of cities in supporting the fulfillment of rights and adequate infrastructure for children," he said during a G20 webinar on ‘A Common Framework: Towards Child-Friendly Cities Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic, Climate Crisis, and Rising Structural Inequalities,’ on Monday.

The G20 Presidency is a very important moment to increase the involvement of every city because half of the total population is predicted to live in urban areas by 2050, he explained.

Therefore, the number of children and teenagers living in urban areas will increase. Therefore, regional governments need to anticipate future problems by establishing policies that can support the fulfillment of children's rights, provide protection, and enable children to grow and develop optimally.

Gunawan said that Indonesia's commitment to fulfilling children's rights is reflected through several laws such as Law Number 23 of 2002 concerning the protection of children’s rights and obligations, Law Number 8 of 2016 regarding children with disabilities, and the Minister of Home Affairs’ Regulation Number 2 of 2016 concerning Child Identity Cards (KIA).

He emphasized that the Ministry of Home Affairs will continue to support the fulfillment of children's rights through planning, monitoring policies, and budgeting made by each regional government.

The ministry will also facilitate regional development planning for building smart, responsive, and child-friendly cities and providing spaces for children to play and learn.

He expressed the hope that all regional governments would contribute to encouraging the G20 to push the emergence of good practices and collaboration between cities to address issues related to children for dealing with problems such as climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and economic recovery.
