Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry is using satellite technology for surveillance in the fisheries sector.

"Our ministry is also preparing a satellite-based integrated technology that will be used for the fisheries operation monitoring system," said Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, in a welcoming video that was played at the T20 webinar on ‘Meaningful Broadband for Blue and Green Economy,’ here on Tuesday.

The satellite, he said, will not only have a supervisory function, but will also assist the government in understanding and taking steps related to the needs in the sector.

"Collective action and understanding digital transformation are essential to strengthen global efforts that enable us to measure progress in sustainable marine development," said Minister Trenggono.

The ministry is using technology such as the Vessel Monitoring System, Radar-sat 2 Satellite, and Cosmo Skymed to fight illegal fishing.

In his remarks, the minister also said that the blue economy is one of the main references for making the sea a sustainable resource. The ministry has three main pillars for the blue economy--ecological health, economic growth, and social inclusion, he added.

"The three pillars provide basic legitimacy to maintain marine health and resilience, attract investment, and create jobs," said Trenggono.

The ministry also has three priority programs: the implementation of a policy on measurable fishing throughout the State Fisheries Management Area of the Republic of Indonesia (WPPNRI) for ecological sustainability, the development of aquaculture, especially export-oriented commodities, and the development of aquaculture villages based on local wisdom to eradicate poverty and protect high economic value commodities from potential extinction, he informed.

Minister Trenggono in February shared plans for building a command center in Maluku to anticipate illegal fishing practices. The command center will use satellites to prevent illegal activity in the six water zones.
