Jakarta (ANTARA) - United States Ambassador to Indonesia, Sung Y. Kim, visited Batam and Natuna, Riau Islands, to engage with Indonesian partners and highlight opportunities for increased bilateral cooperation in the economic and security sectors in the province.

Ambassador Kim visited the province from March 29 to 30, 2022, according to a press release issued by the US Embassy in Jakarta on Wednesday.

In Batam, Ambassador Kim met with Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad and representatives from US companies to discuss the local business climate and the US government's plans for an executive-led Advanced Manufacturing Business Development Mission to Indonesia, Singapore, and Japan.

Delegates of the mission will include representatives from US companies who will provide advanced manufacturing products and systems, said the embassy.

Ambassador Kim said that the United States will continue working with Riau Islands to advance economic growth and prosperity in the province.

"We appreciate the support from the Riau Islands government for the US businesses that are contributing to the local economy, and our productive discussion about opportunities to increase collaboration," he added.

During his trip, Ambassador Kim visited the maritime training center site of the Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) with Bakamla head, Vice Admiral Aan Kurnia.

As part of efforts to build strong US-Indonesia maritime security cooperation, the US government has committed more than US$3.5 million for building barracks for men and women personnel, a dining galley, classrooms, offices, and a law enforcement training lab, according to the embassy.

During his visit, Ambassador Kim also met with TNI Joint Region 1 Commander, Vice Admiral Muhammad Ali. They discussed several regional concerns affecting security in Riau Islands and Sumatra.

Vice Admiral Ali also shared his insights into the TNI Navy’s recent decision to move a major combat command headquarters to Natuna to better respond to threats in the Natuna Sea.

In Natuna, Ambassador Kim was welcomed by the Vice Regent. He also directly learned about prominent academics’ perspectives on environment preservation, economy, and security, as well as their visions for the strategically located region.
