On July 7, Trump announced that the tariff would take effect on August 1.
"There is a postponement in the implementation (of the tariff) to allow for the finalization of ongoing negotiations," Hartarto said in a video statement observed on Monday.
The decision followed Hartarto's meeting with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative (USTR) Chief Jamieson Greer in Washington, DC, on July 9.
According to Hartarto, both sides agreed to continue discussions on Indonesia’s proposal regarding the tariff policy over the next three weeks.
"We expect to finalize the adjustment to our proposal within that timeframe," he noted.
Hartarto traveled to the United States after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His visit aimed to advance negotiations on US import tariffs affecting Indonesian goods.
He described the meeting as a significant step toward strengthening Indonesia–US trade relations, especially in the wake of Trump's tariff announcement.
The discussions also covered non-tariff barriers, digital economy cooperation, economic security, and broader commercial and investment partnerships.
Hartarto highlighted US interest in deeper collaboration in the critical minerals sector, including nickel, copper, and cobalt, where Indonesia has substantial reserves.
"The US has shown strong interest in enhancing our cooperation on critical minerals," he said. "We must optimize this potential, especially in downstream processing."
