Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian badminton team is aiming to emerge as the general champions at the Vietnam SEA Games, which are almost coinciding with the Thomas & Uber Cup scheduled from May 8–15, 2022, in Bangkok, Thailand.

The statement was made by Deputy I of CdM Indonesia, Arlan Perkasa Lukman, at PBSI National Training Center in Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Tuesday.

He said that the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has faced great challenges in preparing for the three international competitions.

"The number of players is a lot, and Indonesia also continues to produce young athletes, so it feels not difficult for PBSI to deploy its best athletes," Lukman added.

Lukman said he is optimistic that Indonesia can achieve the best results in the three badminton events because training has been provided to national athletes not only for the SEA Games but also for the Olympics.

According to him, teams have been rearranged, especially for the women's doubles, with Apriyani Rahayu about to get a new partner, Ribka Sugiarto.

For the men's doubles, young athletes will be partnered with those who are experienced, and surprises will emerge, he said.

"This will be interesting and the audience will be excited in May, as there will be Thomas & Uber and SEA Games, where the best Indonesian athletes will perform in the three events," he said.

Deputy secretary general of PBSI, Edi Sukarno, said he is optimistic that the target of becoming the general champions can be achieved if the athletes bring home at least three SEA Games medals.

The women's doubles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles groups are expected to aim for the medals during the SEA Games from May 12–23 in Hanoi, Vietnam, Sukarno added.
