Jakarta (ANTARA) - Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas praised the spirit of togetherness among citizens in the midst of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

"(The value of) togetherness has become Indonesia's extraordinary strength. (This is) because meeting each other in person can alleviate existing tensions as well as strengthen bonds within the community. We must protect and preserve this tradition together," the minister noted in a written statement here on Saturday.

Qoumas called for people to foster the tradition of getting together in the midst of national struggles to recover from the impact of the pandemic.

The minister was sanguine that the tradition of getting together could foster mutual understanding that reinforces the willingness to work hand-in-hand.

Such positive values offer a unique advantage for Indonesia that not many other nations had.

The minister invited parents, teachers, and community leaders to continue to develop the seeds of friendship from an early age for the nation's future generations.

"I am completely sure that only by working hand in hand will our country have a higher civilization, progress quickly, and be respected by other nations," he affirmed.

However, Qoumas also reminded the public to maintain connection while still adhering to health protocols during the pandemic recovery period.

Despite not hosting a particular get-together event, Qoumas said he still went around to meet and greet people. It could be as simple as shaking hands to celebrate Eid with individuals from various backgrounds, such as fishermen, farmers, workers, students, religious leaders, politicians, organizational activists, and public officials, comprising the chairman of the General Election Committee and regional leaders.

"To be honest, I am very touched because Eid al-Fitr teaches us to stay connected with each other out of pure sincerity. This is a big capital for the nation to rise and (stay) strong after two years of the pandemic. Hopefully, the pandemic would be fully eradicated, and we can do activities normally once more," he concluded.
