Madiun (ANTARA) - A bus overturned on the Madiun-Surabaya Highway in East Java on Tuesday after its driver reportedly lost control while trying to overtake a car at high speed, leaving 19 passengers injured, police said.

"The bus was running at high speed to overtake another vehicle when a truck traveled from the opposite direction. The driver then drove the bus to the left. To avoid hitting a motorcyclist, the driver then drove the bus to the right and the bus overturned," spokesperson for Madiun city Police, 2nd Inspector Roni Susanto, informed.

The bus was carrying 37 passengers and three crew members when it met with the accident. At least 19 people were injured in the mishap.

The bus accident was the second this month in East Java. Earlier this month, at least 13 people had died, while 12 others had sustained serious injuries after a bus overturned on the left side of the Surabaya-Mojokerto section of the Trans Java toll road.

The Surabaya-bound bus, which was carrying 25 people on board, was traveling at medium speed in a slow lane when it met with the accident, chief of the Highway Patrol Unit of the East Java Provincial Police, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Dwi Sumrahadi, stated in Surabaya.

When the bus arrived at kilometer 712+200 on the toll road, it veered to the left and rammed into a variable message sign (VMS) pole on the side of the road and overturned, he added.
