"This message has been conveyed to the Indian Ambassador in Jakarta," the Indonesian Foreign Ministry tweeted on Tuesday.
The BJP, on Sunday, suspended its national spokesperson, Nupur Sharma, and expelled its Delhi media head, Naveen Kumar Jindal, after they made derogatory remarks against the Prophet Muhammad.
Sharma is reported to have insulted the Prophet and his wife Aisha in a TV debate last week. Following an outcry over the comments made during the debate, Sharma’s colleague, Jindal, is reported to have posted a now-deleted tweet about the Prophet that also angered many, Aljazeera reported on Monday. The remarks have been blamed for clashes in an Indian state and have also prompted demands for the spokeswoman’s arrest in India.
Several Arab and other Muslim-majority countries expressed condemnations and summoned Indian ambassadors in the respective countries to express protests against the unacceptable remarks.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) also added its voice to the condemnation.
“The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation expresses its strong condemnation and denunciation of the recent insults issued by an official in the ruling party in India towards the Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him,” the 57-member state organization noted in a statement as quoted by Aljazeera.
The controversy has raised the ire of social media users in Arab countries that have called for a boycott of Indian products, denounced the escalation of hatred against Islam and Muslims, and accused India of following in the footsteps of France and China in promoting Islamophobia, Aljazeera reported.
