Jakarta (ANTARA) - A recently-issued government regulation has eased the requirements for applicants seeking to gain Indonesian nationality, an official has said.

According to the director of state administration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights' Directorate General of Legal Administrative Affairs, Baroto, Government Regulation No. 21 of 2022 on Methods of Acquisition, Loss, Revocation, and Reacquisition of Indonesian Nationality ensures affordable application fee and easier documentary requirements.

"Some conveniences are provided by the regulation, including on the application fee aspect," he said here on Tuesday.

Applicants now need to pay only Rp5 million (US$340) as application fee, making it more affordable than acquiring nationality through naturalization, he said.

The government regulation has also relaxed the requirement of immigration status certificates for children of foreign nationals born in Indonesia who have never been abroad, he added.

The new regulation allows eligible applicants to submit a domicile certificate instead of an immigration status certificate, he said, adding that the directorate general is currently deliberating with relevant institutions on the possibility of replacing the immigration certificate with other instruments.

Government Regulation No. 21 of 2022 enacted by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) last May is a present for residents who want to gain Indonesian nationality, particularly for children born from mixed marriage between Indonesian and foreign nationals, Baroto said.

He expounded that the new regulation will relieve children born from mixed marriage from rigorous requirements to attain Indonesian nationality through naturalization as elucidated by Law No. 12 of 2006 on Nationality.

The law prescribes that applicants seeking to gain Indonesian nationality undergo a naturalization process by, for instance, staying in Indonesia for five years in a row or ten years, if the stay is non-consecutive, the official added.
