Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has said he expects the new capital, Nusantara, to serve as the base for future-oriented economic, technological, knowledge, employment, and skills development.

He delivered the statement at the opening of the 32nd National Congress and the 31st National Catholic Student Association Consultative Assembly in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Wednesday.

"This is where we will begin the future (oriented) economy, green economy, future technology, future knowledge, (future) everything. Indeed, we are doing this here. And we expect that this will also open up future jobs and (encourage) future skills. And who will (reap benefits from) it later? All brothers and sisters from the National Catholic Student Association," he remarked.

The shifting of the national capital will not merely involve a physical transfer of government buildings from Jakarta and making them magnificent, he added. Nusantara, which belongs to the youth of the country, will function as a gateway to a better future for Indonesia.

"We really have to change the mindset, change our mindset, the bureaucracy must change, new ways of working must (be formulated), platforms to organize our bureaucracy must also be new, all of them (must be new). By using new ways, that is technology," he explained.

Jokowi said that the government is seeking to build all facilities, from hospitals to universities, in Nusantara in accordance with international standards.

He further said he expects Nusantara’s design to attract digital talents, both domestic and global.

"Because in Nusantara capital city, facilities will be prepared. For example, electricity from green energy, from hydropower, in which (water) from Kahayan River (would be sent) to Nusantara capital city. So that in this Nusantara capital city, 70 percent must be a green area, there must be 80 percent of eco-friendly public transportation, means (it will run on) electricity. I also conveyed green energy earlier, meaning renewable energy. And from one point to another, the transportation must be able to reach (all points) in less than 10 minutes. It means a Ten Minutes City," he added.
