Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin expects the higher ranks of the Police Force to hone their personnel's skills in commemoration of the 76th anniversary of the Police Force.

"We expect the Police Force to always maintain order and improve (the skills) of their personnel through education and training they conduct," the vice president noted in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, on Friday.

During this year's anniversary, the Police Force promoted the idea of preciseness in their efforts to support national economic and structural recovery as a means to support growth.

According to Amin, the police faced several limitations in taking action.

The vice president opined that the police force had some codes, limits, or methods that they follow in taking actions.

"We have our (methods). There are some that are persuasive in nature, (such as) through guidance. However, there are also (some instances, methods) that (involves) law enforcement, not in a repressive way but as in enforcing the law," he remarked.

However, he expects the police force to prioritize the persuasive approach.

"There are (legal) proceedings in court if they have violated (the law), for example, (cases) related to blasphemy or such, but what must be put forward is still the persuasive approach," he added.

To commemorate the 76th Police Day, the Commission for Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS) issued a note that detailed the Police Force's work performance during the period from July 2021 to June 2022, specifically pertaining to the human rights aspects.

The commission noted that the police force still widely used violence, authoritative gestures, arrogance, and excessive, inhumane acts.

It was said that the police often concealed their involvement in the event of a violation, which was counterproductive to their task, instead of enforcing the law and protecting and serving the public.

Other violent practices, such as uncontrolled gun use, torture, and others, continued unabated.

The commission recorded at least 677 cases of violence perpetrated by the Police Force during the period from July 2021 to June 2022 that had resulted in as many as 928 being injured, 1,240 losing their lives, and 59 being detained.
