Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment and Forestry Ministry held a ceremony here, Wednesday, to bestow the 2022 Kalpataru Award on 10 environmental community heroes and the 2021 Nirwasita Tantra Award on 42 regional government leaders nationwide.

The Kalpataru award is conferred on groups or individuals for helping to conserve the environment in Indonesia, while the Nirwasita Tantra is bestowed on regional leaders, who have succeeded in applying green and sustainable policies.

Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry Alue Dohong noted in his remarks at the ceremony that the awards had been routinely conferred on those found to have concerns on environmental issues and had implemented various sustainable innovations benefitting the social, economy, and environment sectors.

"The awards are given to motivate them to continue (to implement environmental-based innovations) in their respective regions," he stated.

Dohong remarked that government leaders and environmental activists can become role models and a source of inspiration to encourage greater participation from other individuals and community groups to maintain the environment.

On the occasion, the ministry handed out the 2022 Kalpataru Award to five categories of awardees: environmental pioneer (individuals), supporter (field officers or civil servants), protector (community groups), as well as patron (community leaders, business actors, or researchers).
