"The attention on waste washing onshore will continue to be optimized, (starting) from Biaung Beach to Mertasari; this is considering that Sanur is a tourism area," head of the office, Ida Bagus Putra Wirabawa, said in Denpasar on Friday.
The winds are currently blowing from east to west, resulting in garbage washing up on Sanur Beach, he informed.
According to Wirabawa, the waste is dominated by algae plants, plastic waste, and other types of waste.
"In handling it, we are paying attention to the ebb and flow of the sea tides. In the next few days, the team will always be ready so that Sanur Beach, as a tourist destination, can continue to be enjoyed," he said.
On Friday, a team from the Denpasar Environment and Hygiene Office successfully cleaned up 25 cu m (cubic meters) of waste.
"As long as there are still waste washing onshore, handling will continue to be carried out," Wirabawa remarked.
He also appealed to people in Denpasar, the capital of Bali province, not to litter, saying it would result in the waterways flowing to the sea becoming dirty.
"We urge the community to jointly protect the environment by not littering. Thus, when the wind direction changes, the beach would not be polluted," he said.
Meanwhile, the Home Ministry is supporting communities' efforts toward recycling and upcycling waste into products of high quality to accelerate waste handling in Bali ahead of the G20 Summit in November 2022.
