"Currently, there are only four laboratories that can conduct CHT. With the intent to conduct screening of all newborns, it is necessary to increase the number of laboratories," he informed.
In 2022, the ministry has added the facility of congenital hypothyroidism screening at seven RSUPs (Central General Hospitals): Karyadi Hospital in Semarang, Adam Malik Hospital in Medan, Dr. M. Djamil Hospital in Padang, M. Hoesin Hospital in Palembang, Prof. Dr. I.G. Ngoerah Hospital in Denpasar, Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital in Makassar, and Dr. R.D. Kandouw Hospital in Manado.
According to the deputy minister, the addition of laboratories is being carried out in stages, while intense coordination with related hospitals has been carried out.
Thyroid hormone abnormalities or congenital hypothyroidism in at-risk newborns can cause serious health problems, Harbuwono said.
"If babies have normal thyroid hormones, then their growth and development will be optimal. Their height and weight will be enough (normal), also with good intelligence," he added.

According to him, congenital hypothyroidism must be treated as early as possible, considering that thyroid hormones have an important role in supporting children's growth and development.
Inability to produce sufficient thyroid hormones can interfere with babies' development and growth as it can affect the nerves in the brain, and late treatment can even lead to disability and mental retardation.
CHT can detect the symptoms early so that treatment can be provided, Harbuwono said. "Giving therapy before the child is one month old can prevent damage to the brain nerves," he added.
In 2020, there were more than four thousand healthcare facilities carrying out CHT with laboratory examinations taking place at four main hospitals, Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Dr. Sardjito Hospital, and Dr. Soetomo Hospital.
