North Jakarta is a coastal city and is home to the Tanjung Priok port, Chief of the BNNK Office Adjunct Senior Commissioner Bambang Yudistira said at an event held to disseminate information on the dangers of drug abuse on Friday.
Nearly 600 crew members arrive with foreign ships at the port every day, he noted.
Thus, the potential for the smuggling of drugs into the capital city via the sea is quite high since drug trafficking is a borderless crime, he said.
In the past year, Indonesians aged between 15 and 64 years became targets of drug abuse, he said.
The prevalence of drug abuse in the country is 1.95 percent, which means that 195 out of every 10 thousand people aged between 15 and 64 years have used drugs once, he informed.
According to data from 2021, even employees approaching the pensionable age (65 years) are at risk of becoming drug addicts.
Meanwhile, chief of the Immigration Office of Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, Abdi Widodo Subagio, reminded his ranks of the danger of drugs.
Drugs do not only destroy the mental health of drug abusers but also affect their sociocultural life and degrade their morale, he said.
