When it comes to employment protection for persons with disabilities, the Indonesian government is committed to offering inclusive protection to persons with disabilities
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government remains committed to increasing employment protection, including for those with disabilities, on account of the fact that the digital era has a major impact on the employment sector.

"When it comes to employment protection for persons with disabilities, the Indonesian government is committed to offering inclusive protection to persons with disabilities," the director general of manpower supervision and occupational safety and health at the Manpower Ministry, Haiyani Rumondang, noted in a written statement on Monday.

Rumondang remarked that protection for disabled people aligned with the mandate of the Manpower Act No. 13 of 2003 which stipulated that the state guarantees equality and non-discriminatory treatment in getting jobs, and the state required employers to provide protection to persons with disabilities.

She highlighted that the implementation of such rights was deemed inclusive to the workers, an employment concept that respected human rights by including and integrating everyone on an equal basis. The statement was delivered at the International Conference on Manpower and Sustainable Development (IMSIDE) in Bali on September 8-9.

"Equality in the employment aspect ensures that persons with disabilities, in the process of recruitment, job placement, job training, and career development, (get a fair chance or treatment) and without discrimination," Rumondang stated.

She also discussed about obligation for the government and state- and regional-owned enterprises to ensure that persons with disabilities constitute at least two percent of their total workforce. Private companies were necessitated to employ disabled people to make up one percent of their total workforce.

She also highlighted the importance of taking objective and balanced measures between workers and employers, including through the government's imposition of administrative sanctions for private and non-private entrepreneurs that failed to take into account the interests of persons with disabilities.

Moreover, the government commended entrepreneurs offering decent work opportunities to people with disabilities by conferring national awards on these entities, Rumondang concluded.
