"Promote mutual assistance and the spirit of people's unity to reduce potential losses (due to extreme weather). Anticipatory measures must be prioritized in facing natural disaster risks to reduce losses and casualty potentials," Moerdijat noted in her written statement here Sunday.
Moerdijat made the remarks in response to the National Meteorology and Climatology Agency's (BMKG's) statement on Friday (September 9) that warned residents regarding the likelihood of extreme weather in Indonesia in the upcoming week.
The agency cautioned residents to be vigilant about the likely increase in rainfall on September 10-16.
Moreover, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) noted that Indonesia had borne witness to 2,230 natural disasters from January 1 to August 14, 2022.
The deputy speaker said that residents and all parties must be heedful of the agency's extreme weather warning and take preemptive measures to reduce the potential effects of natural disasters.
She also expects residents and regional authorities to intensify collaboration and mutual assistance in facing the potential of natural disasters.
"Moreover, residents are currently toiling to recover from effects of the pandemic and the economic crisis," she noted.
Moerdijat urged regional authorities and residents to not be neglectful of the natural disaster potential caused by extreme weather, as warned by BMKG.
All parties must also pay attention to take anticipatory measures to ensure residents are protected from possible harmful effects of natural disasters, she stated.
