We have established what we call contract farming. We plant our rice on their land, and they must sell the harvested rice to us.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial authority is collaborating with neighboring regions as part of an effort to maintain food resilience in the capital city.

Head of the Jakarta Provincial Food, Marine, and Fisheries Office Suharini Eliawati said that the provincial authority is collaborating with Cilacap District, Central Java, to maintain rice stocks.

"We have established what we call contract farming. We plant our rice on their land, and they must sell the harvested rice to us," Eliawati informed here on Friday.

Since close to 98 percent of food in Jakarta is supplied by other regions, collaborations with other regions will be essential to maintaining food resilience in Jakarta, she added.

The provincial authority has signed an agreement with the Cilacap authority to fulfill rice stocks in Jakarta with the rice prices predetermined in the agreement, she informed. Jakarta could purchase the surplus, if there is any, she added.

Besides maintaining food resilience in Jakarta, the arrangement will also help keep the national inflation level under control.

Earlier, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said that a total of 1.1 million residents in the capital will receive subsidized food benefits.

"The subsidized affordable food package will be provided to 1.1 million recipients, and will be distributed from 312 points throughout Jakarta," he said at Cipinang Kebembem Market, East Jakarta, on Thursday (September 22, 2022).

The governor informed that provincial-owned market operator Pasar Jaya will supply the packages at 159 of the 312 distribution points.

Moreover, 108 distribution points will be opened at Jakarta public flats, 30 in the province's Thousands Islands region, and some others will be operated by provincial trade and meat company Dharma Jaya.

The food packages will consist of rice, meat, eggs, poultry, fish, and milk, he noted.

If residents purchase the foods outside, they would need to spend Rp402 thousand (US$26.9), but they will be able to purchase them through the program for just Rp126 thousand (US$8.4), Baswedan informed.

"Hence, the government has subsidized Rp276 thousand (US$18.4), almost 70 percent of the total price," the governor noted.
