Tokyo (ANTARA) - Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian encouraged the integration of overseas Indonesian citizens' data registered at embassies with the data recorded at the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Home Affairs Ministry.

"One of the important documents for the diaspora is the identity card. Hence, we cooperate with Foreign Affairs Minister Retno (Marsudi)," Karnavian noted in his remarks at the Population Administration Service for Indonesian Citizens in Japan held at the School of the Republic of Indonesia in Tokyo (SRIT) on Monday.

Karnavian stated that Minister Marsudi had supported the establishment of the cooperation on data integration between the Directorate General of Dukcapil and 38 out of the 128 Indonesian embassies all across the world.

Thus, overseas Indonesian citizens do not need to return to Indonesia to extend the validity period of their identity cards as well as to register for birth certificates or family cards (KK), he explained.

"Thus, they do not need to spend money to (go to) Indonesia to extend the identity card, (or) even (to make) birth or death certificate," the minister stated.

Karnavian noted that in addition to conducting data integration between the embassies and Dukcapil, his side also provided facilities, infrastructure, and training at several embassies.

Currently, his side is also working on creating digital identity cards, so that people do not need to physically bring their electronic identity cards, as the digital version of the cards can be saved on their smartphones and was equipped with barcodes.

“This One Data (data integration) Program is important for Indonesia to invite both foreign and local investors, as we are experiencing very rapid (population) growth, or (showing an expansive population) pyramid due to the large number of young people," he remarked.

However, the digital identity card developed by the Home Affairs Ministry is only available on Google Play Store for the Indonesian region.

Karnavian assessed that data integration is also important to find the exact number of overseas Indonesian citizens which is crucial to prepare for the implementation of the 2024 General Election.

However, he emphasized that the implementation of data integration must be supported by a strict security system.

"We really must strengthen the security aspect, Do not let it be hacked. So far, our system runs quite well,” he added.
