Jakarta (ANTARA) - The community has a strategic role in efforts to control non-communicable diseases (PTM), the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture has said.

"The community has a strategic role in preventing and tackling non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases," the ministry's deputy for the coordination of health quality improvement and population development, Agus Suprapto, said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The government has continued to mobilize and empower the community for preventing and overcoming PTM risk factors as part of its strategy to control non-communicable diseases, he informed.

"In addition, the government has also continued to improve public access to services for early detection and management of risk factors of non-communicable diseases," Suprapto added.

The government will develop and strengthen the epidemiological surveillance system, monitoring, and information system related to PTM, he said.

"Financing for controlling risk factors for non-communicable diseases also continues to be increased," Suprapto added.

He said that socialization and education regarding efforts to prevent non-communicable diseases must be intensified in order to increase public awareness and understanding.

"We hope that the community can take independent steps to prevent non-communicable diseases, one of which is by implementing clean and healthy living behaviors," he added.

The government is planning to intensify the Healthy Living Community Movement or Germas campaign as part of efforts to prevent non-communicable diseases.

"The Germas campaign continues to be strengthened in accordance with the Presidential Instruction Number 1 of 2017 concerning the Healthy Living Community Movement in order to encourage the public to prioritize a promotive and preventive healthy paradigm," Suprapto said.

The Germas campaign involves seven steps: performing physical activity, eating fruits and vegetables, not smoking, not consuming alcoholic beverages, conducting regular health checks, maintaining environmental cleanliness, and using latrines.
