"The membership is the ninth for Indonesia. The country has raised three agendas that align with the priority of developing the communication and information sector," secretary general of the Communication and Information Ministry Mira Tayyiba said in Bucharest, Romania, on Monday.
With Indonesia's re-election as ITU Council's member, we see many similarities between ITU priority programs and our national priority programs, including Indonesia's program for ITU itself, she noted.
The first agenda that Indonesia has raised at ITU is "connecting the unconnected,” which aligns with the Indonesian government's national priority program on developing the information and communication technology infrastructure.
The ministry, in the past several years, has focused on expediting the provision of digital infrastructure and access.
"We also bring similar agenda for ITU," Tayyiba said after attending the ITU's 2022 Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-22).
Indonesia's second agenda involves women’s empowerment, which aligns with its allyship, so that women’s representation in the digital sector can be fulfilled, including in the ITU leadership.
The last agenda revolves around capacity building, which is linked to the digital literacy and digital skills national priority program.
These agendas have been brought before the ITU for developing countries to develop cooperation between Indonesia and the organization.
The result of the voting at ITU's PP-22 showed that Indonesia secured the third largest vote share in the election for ITU Council members for the 2023–2026 period.
The largest and the second-highest vote shares were cornered by the United Arab Emirates and India, respectively.
Indonesia's latest membership of the ITU Council continues the country's involvement in the organization that has existed since 1982.
