Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Co-operatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Teten Masduki hopes that national universities will learn from foreign universities' successes in developing entrepreneurship innovations.

The minister in a statement on Sunday also called on national universities to develop domestic-made products and creative innovation in entrepreneurship to benefit the people.

"There are a lot of success stories on entrepreneurship innovations from foreign countries' universities, which Indonesian universities could emulate. I have high expectations for this, particularly for the University of Garut," Masduki said while officiating the University of Garut's Entrepreneurship Faculty building.

He said that national universities must learn from some countries, such as South Korea, which have successfully developed research industry in universities and helped ncrease business profit by more than 40 per cent.

"We will develop (the University of Garut) as a centre of excellence to conceive an evolution in entrepreneurship because what is essential now is not merely the products, but also (how to) develop business models, including digitisation," Masduki noted.

The minister highlighted President Joko Widodo's instruction to the government to create one million entrepreneurs by 2024in order to rev up the percentage of national entrepreneurs level from 3.47 per cent to 3.95-4 per cent.

According to him, universities must become a place to produce graduates who will become entrepreneurs instead of civil servants or employees of private companies.

"Our survey revealed that 73 per cent of our youth desired to become entrepreneurs. If campuses do not change their concept, campuses might be abandoned (by our youth)," Masduki remarked.
