Palembang, South Sumatra (ANTARA) - The government of South Sumatra has urged district and city governments in the province to enhance coordination with related parties to handle inflation.

South Sumatra has formed a Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID) for boosting coordination between the district, city, and provincial governments in efforts to control inflation, Deputy Governor Mawardi Yahya informed here on Wednesday.

“These steps must be made so that inflation can be controlled. If not, the community’s purchasing power can be disrupted. It is essential to coordinate,” he stressed.

One of the factors that have triggered inflation is the increase in food prices, Yahya noted. Therefore, several issues—from the unavailability of supply to the smooth distribution of food—are expected to become a concern of the district and city governments through the TPID.

Yet another inflation trigger has been the increase in fuel prices set by the central government in early September. Regarding the fuel price issue, the government has already readied a social security program.

The South Sumatra provincial government has also initiated an affordable rice market program for lower-income people in a bid to help them face the increase in rice prices in the past three weeks.

“South Sumatra is experiencing inflation, but still under control. However, we should not be careless. All parties must synergize and coordinate,” the deputy governor said.

According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS)-South Sumatra office, the province experienced an inflation of 1.26 percent month to month, 5.60 percent year to date, and 6.70 percent year on year in September 2022.

Commodities that dominantly contributed to the cumulative inflation from January to September in the province, which the TPID should pay attention to, include fuel, red chilies, rice, air transportation, and broiler chicken eggs.
