"The Vision Center program in primary healthcare facilities is expected to improve access to quality eye care services for the community starting from early detection to follow-up care," Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono stated at the World Sight Day webinar followed online on Thursday.
Harbuwono emphasized that affordable, available, and accessible services for the community are essential in eye care services. In addition, increasing the integration of eye care services in every primary healthcare facility is also deemed important.

According to the deputy health minister, taking care of the eyes would be better if it were to be started as early as possible, from the age of two to 18 years. This is because eye development of children at that age is quite rapid.
"Hence, it is essential for us to maintain balanced nutritional intake for children to maintain the health of their eyes," he remarked.
The deputy minister suggested people to get their eyes checked and not wait until they experience visual disturbances first, so that permanent blindness does not occur.

"Eye checkup is important as a form of early detection, so that eye problems found can be immediately treated and permanent blindness does not occur," he explained.
In addition, people are suggested to limit the use of gadgets with the 20-20-20 method in which to looking away from the screen every 20 minutes at something placed 20 feet away for a total of 20 seconds.
"Excessive sun exposure can increase the risk of vision problems. Thus, avoid direct sunlight by wearing a hat or other forms of eye protection when outside," he added.
