Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) reminded parents to act quickly if their child shows early symptoms of acute kidney disorders, such as cough, runny nose, diarrhea, vomiting, little urine, or no urine at all.

"If children experience those complaints, we urge parents to not do a self-diagnose. We suggest that they immediately consult a doctor at the nearest health facility," KSP's expert staff Brian Sri Prahastuti said here on Sunday.

Prahastuti emphasized the importance of preventive measures such as providing adequate amounts of liquid to children.

Currently, she mentioned, the Health Ministry, the Indonesian Pediatric Association (IDAI), and a team of doctors at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital have formed a team to investigate the case of acute kidney disorders in children.

The Health Ministry has also issued clinical instruction and management for health facilities to refer to when finding atypical progressive acute kidney disorders in children patients.

"We ask the public to remain calm and not panic because the government is already working to investigate this case (acute kidney disorders in children)," she said.

Meanwhile, as of October 14, IDAI reported that the number of acute kidney disorders in children reached 152 cases, which increased from 146 cases.

The figure was obtained from the reports of 16 IDAI branches throughout Indonesia.

At least 14 provinces have reported cases of mysterious acute kidney disorders in children, among others, Jakarta with the most cases, followed by West Java, West Sumatra, Aceh, Bali, and Yogyakarta.

Meanwhile, the team is still investigating the cause of the disease as further research is needed.

Further research is needed on the results of discussions with teams from other countries that have recorded similar cases, such as Gambia and Africa — specifically, the presumption that the consumption of drugs containing ethylene glycol causes the disease, the Health Ministry stated earlier.
