We should have been able to suppress it in terms of the death toll.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) recorded that seven people passed away due to wet hydrometeorological disasters in Indonesia from October 17 to October 23, 2022.

"Last week, 13 people passed away, and the week before that 10 people passed away," Acting Head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center at BNPB Abdul Muhari noted during an online Disaster Briefing, Monday.

The increasing number of people dying as a result of disasters in Indonesia should be taken into consideration, specifically with regard to floods, landslides, and extreme weather disasters.

"We should be able to suppress it in terms of the death toll," he remarked.

On the other hand, disasters that occurred in 20 provinces and 59 districts and cities in a week had not caused an increase in the number of evacuees and those who were affected.

In the past week, the number of residents evacuated and affected reached 146 thousand. Meanwhile, this week, the figure was recorded to reach 104 thousand people, Muhari explained.

"However, we still have not been able to optimize our measures and minimize potential death victims. This becomes our note," he emphasized.

It was noted that during the week, there were relative intense wet hydrometeorological disasters in Sumatra, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, southern shorelines of Java, and East Java.

Within the week, 74 disasters occurred across Indonesia, starting from wet, dry, to geological hydrometeorological disasters.

Head of BNPB Lieutenant General Suharyanto reminded the government and people to be ready in terms of equipment and personnel to deal with all possibilities of disasters.

As November draws near, the rainfall intensity will continue to increase toward the peak of the season in January and February.

In this situation, Muhari urged the people to be ready against landslides, extreme weathers, and floods.
