"The first phase of the extraordinary congress will be the sending of a notification regarding the congress proposal to the FIFA," PSSI Chairperson Mochamad Iriawan stated in a video broadcast by the PSSI TV YouTube channel on Saturday.
He explained that the decision was taken to organize the extraordinary congress to prevent division among PSSI constituent members, especially after the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy earlier this month that claimed 135 lives.
The decision to organize the extraordinary congress was taken despite the PSSI Statute regulating that the congress takes place three months after 50 percent, or two-thirds of the PSSI members requested its organization by a written statement, he explained.
He noted that currently, only two PSSI members -- Persis Solo and Persebaya Surabaya -- requested an extraordinary congress.
"The PSSI executive committee decided to expedite the extraordinary congress by paying heed to the letters sent by the two members. The PSSI executive committee does not want any division among its members, as we are the holders of the voters' mandate that represent PSSI members," Iriawan stated.
The PSSI head expressed optimism that the decision to organize the extraordinary congress could convince all stakeholders to help the resumption of League 1, 2, and 3 for the 2023-2023 match season.
Earlier, the joint independent fact-finding team for the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy, in its final report published on October 14, suggested the PSSI executive committee, including PSSI head Iriawan, to resign to show moral responsibility for the tragedy.
In terms of the final report, the fact-finding team suggested that the PSSI organize an extraordinary congress to select new PSSI leaders and executive committee members.
The team also appealed to the government to suspend the League 1, 2, and 3 matches before PSSI made a significant reform to their organization.
