Indonesia has led major economies to deliberate efforts in realizing a better world for the people through the G20 Summit in Bali on November 15-16, 2022.
As the helmsman of the G20, Indonesia has designated three priority issues of transition to sustainable energy, digital transformation, and global healthcare architecture for which efforts to improve are a must to address the multi-dimensional crises plaguing the world.
Despite the presence of the common enemy -- the COVID-19 pandemic -- rivalry among countries continues to intensify and cause warfare that neglects human rights. The conflict spills over to other sectors, causing food, energy, and financial crises and exposing all countries to vulnerabilities.
Heads of state and government of Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union answered Indonesia’s appeal to end rivalries and address ongoing crises by personally attending the G20 Summit to deliberate solutions.
Despite its short time, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) successfully led major economies to discuss concrete solutions to ongoing crises to create world peace and realize sustainable living through culture and local wisdom.
Indonesia’s national wisdom, adhered to by its people from various ethnic groups for long, encourages a harmonious life with nature to ensure the Earth could continue to cater to the insatiable nature of humans.
The progress made in the field of science and technology has bolstered efforts of the human race to establish and develop a sustainable way of living for the future.
With positive values of mutual assistance, tolerance, and democracy, Jokowi solemnly presided over the G20 Summit and spoke at length on the ongoing crises while encouraging concrete solutions from major countries.

Commitment to mutual assistance
Indonesia’s G20 Presidency has successfully encouraged the global community to realize a world with equitable development through, for instance, the establishment of the Pandemic Fund.
The Pandemic Fund is established to help countries prepare for possible pandemics in the future and ensure an optimum financing mechanism of the global healthcare architecture in pandemic prevention and handling.
The newly formed international fund will involve the World Bank, as the fund custodian, and the World Health Organization (WHO), as the advisor, providing inputs on how the fund must be used by countries to bolster vigilance and prevent possible pandemics in future.
Acknowledging that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused multifaceted crises in various countries, Indonesia believed that developing countries need an empowering partnership with developed countries to improve their healthcare system.
While urging developed countries in the G20 to involve developing nations in seeking solutions to health issues, Indonesia also encouraged developing countries to partake in assuring the global healthcare system supply chain, research, and production.
The global community must collaborate to reduce the gap in healthcare system development by enhancing research and transfer of technology as well as ensuring access to materials for healthcare production.
Indonesia also believed that the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Waiver should not include only COVID-19-related aspects and must expand to all aspects of healthcare products and solutions, including disease diagnostics and therapeutics.
Moreover, in the environmental sector, US President Joe Biden and other parties have mobilized fund worth US$20 billion to assist energy transition projects in Indonesia.
The fund, disbursed from the United States, Japan, global financial institutions, and the private sectors, is pivotal for Indonesia to reduce carbon emissions and expand renewable energy.
The world should not repeat its mistakes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The global community must stop all forms of warfare and mobilize investments and assistance to develop digital infrastructure in all countries. “Never again” must be the joint commitment of the global community.
Popular support for G20
Positive output from and achievements of Indonesia’s G20 Presidency have been disseminated by government institutions and public communities to arouse residents’ pride towards Indonesia’s leadership in the global community.
The National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) is among the government institutions partaking in disseminating good news about the G20 to the family level to enable residents to gain an understanding of every issue deliberated in the G20.
The BKKBN utilized various mediums to promote the G20, such as through collective exercise activities to raise awareness on global healthcare architecture with agency representatives, Planning Generation Forum (GenRe), and family planning villages.
Moreover, the BKKBN has mobilized 600 thousand family assistants and 1.2 million anti-stunting instructors to promote maternal and child health issues, which Indonesia and other major countries discussed at the G20 Forum.
The agency also invited local MSMEs and hawkers to participate in G20 fairs to improve their livelihoods and develop resilient families.
G20 has given positive energy to government institutions, communities, and residents, including BKKBN, in encouraging mutual assistance among the people throughout Indonesia and contributing through other means for the success of G20 in achieving its goals.
Indonesia’s G20 Presidency is a historical moment for the nation and the global community, as Indonesia has the opportunity to lead the world in seeking solutions to global issues and setting commitments for world peace and a sustainable future.
