"Media literacy capacity is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate information in various forms of media," the province's expert staff for government, law, and politics, Herson B. Aden, said, reading Central Kalimantan Governor Sugianto Sabran's statement here on Thursday.
According to Sabran's statement, the current digital era has opened people’s access to various types of information through many forms of media, and that must be balanced with strong media literacy.
Digitalization in the broadcasting sector is an opportunity for regions and remote areas to achieve equal distribution of broadcast reception, without having to connect to the Internet network, take a subscription, or use a satellite dish, he said.
With digital television broadcasts, the flow of information cannot be contained. According to the governor, a filter or shield will be needed to deal with the flow of information.
"To filter out this variety of information is by using local wisdom, where local (values) and local culture can be a shield because they have lived and grown within the existence of the local community," he said.
The local wisdom of Central Kalimantan society is diverse and rich with the noble values of a civilized society, so it can be an extraordinary force for building resilience.
"Digital broadcasting in the regions is a big challenge, especially for young people, where they must see it as an opportunity to develop creativity and innovation," he said.
The push for healthy broadcasting, which is based on the foundation and perspective of local wisdom, is an effort to collate local wisdom from each region into national wisdom.
Furthermore, he expressed the hope that the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) will involve various elements of the community in the media literacy movement, including by forming a Community of Broadcasting Care Society (KMPP) in regions.
