Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry Alue Dohong has expressed the hope that the education sector will make a significant contribution to Indonesia’s efforts to achieve its climate change mitigation targets.

"Because the younger generation is an important stakeholder to oversee the achievement of climate change policy implementation in Indonesia," he said at the Environment and Forestry Ministry’s (KLHK’s) headquarters here on Thursday.

He made the statement during the awarding ceremony for the 2022 Independent and National Adiwiyata – or Green School – Awards.

The awards were given to schools considered to have shown a strong commitment to and succeeded in implementing environmental education programs in their surroundings.

The deputy minister lauded the role of teachers and students who contributed to the improvement of environmental quality for years.

Furthermore, he urged schools to bolster the implementation of environmentally friendly practices, including waste management, energy and water conservation, tree planting and nurturing, as well as maintaining clean sanitation and drainage.

"KLHK also supports various innovations regarding environmentally friendly behaviors and environmental learnings," he said.

On the same occasion, director general of early childhood education, basic education, and secondary education at the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry, Iwan Syahril, also lauded schools for their role in the environmental protection movement.

He asked the schools which received the awards to encourage other schools to implement environmental conservation education.

“As, according to the principles of the Adiwiyata award (which are educative, participative, and sustainable), the entire educational ecosystem in Indonesia is invited to care more and be more responsible in preserving the environment," the director general added.

At least 789 schools from 27 provinces were assessed for the 2022 Independent and National Adiwiyata Awards.

After the evaluation, the KLHK handed over the 2022 Independent Adiwiyata Awards to 94 schools from 17 provinces.

Meanwhile, the 2022 National Adiwiyata Awards were given to 305 schools from 24 provinces.
