Up till now, we have never given official recognition. No single country in the world has explicitly recognized the Taliban.Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Foreign Affairs Ministry has stressed that Indonesia has not recognized the legitimacy of the Taliban government in Afghanistan since it assumed power in August 2021.
"Up till now, we have never given official recognition. No single country in the world has explicitly recognized the Taliban," Director General for Asia-Pacific and African Affairs at the Foreign Affairs Ministry Abdul Kadir Jailani said at a press conference in Jakarta on Friday.
The Indonesian Embassy in Kabul resumed operations at the charge d'affaires level in December 2021. The embassy had shifted its operations to Islamabad, Pakistan, in the period from August to December 2021 following the downfall of the Afghan government and the return of the Taliban to power.
Although Indonesia has not recognized the Taliban government, it has continued to use constructive approaches to help in the reconstruction process in Afghanistan, Jailani informed.
In this regard, Indonesia will host the International Conference on Afghan Women’s Education (ICAWE), which will be aimed at raising international support to advance women's empowerment in the education sector in Afghanistan, he said.
Education for Afghan women and children has posed a serious challenge due to the Taliban's restrictions, he added.
"The Indonesian government believes there is no development without the adequate role of women. Therefore, it is important for us to organize the conference, which constitutes the concrete evidence of Indonesia('s role) in encouraging peace in Afghanistan," he said.
Indonesia will hold the ICAWE in Bali later this month in collaboration with Qatar. A letter of intent to this effect was signed by the two countries' foreign ministers in March 2022.
Several countries, including Qatar, Pakistan, New Zealand, Norway, the United Arab Emirates, and some international organizations have confirmed their attendance at the conference.
