Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto discussed climate change mitigation and cooperation in environmental management during a meeting with the president of the Japan-Indonesia Association (Japinda) Yasuo Fukuda.

They also exchanged views on carbon emission reduction, environmental conservation, electric vehicle (EV) development cooperation, infrastructure cooperation, and the development of the new capital city (IKN) Nusantara, according to a statement released by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs here on Saturday.

Indonesia has taken corrective steps to manage natural resources and the environment as new, renewable energy potential exists in almost all regions, namely the potential for hydropower, hydrogen, solar, wind, and marine energy, the minister noted.

In addition, he said that Indonesia has continued to accelerate the development of EVs through the 2030 EV development road map.

The target of producing 600 thousand four-wheeled vehicles and more than 2.45 million two-wheeled vehicles by 2030 is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 2.7 million tons from four-wheeled vehicles and 1.1 million tons from two-wheeled vehicles.

He then outlined opportunities for cooperation in the development of IKN, saying sectors including housing, office, health, and education facilities have been opened for foreign investment.

Meanwhile, Fukuda said that there is currently a shortage of skilled workers in Japan due to the country's aging population.

In response, Minister Hartarto said that the demand and supply of skilled workers could be bridged by sending apprentices from Indonesia to Japan.

Afterward, the apprenticeship participants could work for Japanese companies in Indonesia to accelerate technology adoption and transform Indonesia's domestic industry.

Indonesia's total trade with Japan in January–September 2022 stood at US$31.2 billion, up 34.5 percent (year on year) compared to the same period in 2021.
