Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged people to remain alert against the potential for extreme rainfall in the northern parts of West Java and Central Java on Friday (December 30, 2022).

"It needs to be watched out for—however, this is (only) a rain, not a storm. Still, the intensity can be extreme," BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati said at a virtual press conference on Thursday.

The intensity of the extreme rain may reach more than 150 millimeters (mm) per day.

The BMKG head said that based on the modeling map, the agency has estimated that in addition to extreme rain, very heavy as well as heavy rains may be experienced in other regions on Friday.

Very heavy rain may occur in northern and southern Banten, northern Jakarta as well as northern East Java, with the rainfall intensity reaching 100–150 mm per day.

Meanwhile, heavy rains with an intensity of 50–100 mm per day could potentially occur in western Banten, southern Jakarta, southern West Java, Yogyakarta, southern Central Java, and southern East Java.

Furthermore, specifically in the Greater Jakarta area, extreme rain may occur in the northern part of Bekasi district until December 31, 2022, Karnawati said.

"(While) rain with very heavy intensity may occur in the northern part of West Jakarta, East Jakarta, South Jakarta, North Jakarta, and Bekasi city. It (the phenomenon) seems to be evenly distributed," she added.

The BMKG head said that the rainfall intensity could increase on account of several atmospheric dynamics, such as the increasing activity of the Asian monsoon as well as the occurrence of the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) accompanied by the Kelvin and Rossby wave phenomena.

She further said that there are indications of the formation of low-pressure centers around Australia.

"It (weather information dissemination) aims so that the public can plan their activities by adjusting (their plan) to the (weather) conditions," she added.
