Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar, has asked the central and regional governments to intensify coordination to ensure that the supply of food remains safe.

He made the request in response to reports of hindrances faced in the distribution of food in a number of regions in Indonesia due to extreme weather.

"The key is coordination between governments, both central and regional. The central government must be more intensive in checking the needs of regions, especially in islands, frontier, and outermost areas. Prioritize them in the distribution,"

According to him, inter-regional coordination can help maintain distribution channels for food supplies, especially during bad weather.

"Thus, inter-regional cooperation is vital, as well as reducing the risk of food commodity inflation because the same supply from other regions can be controlled," he said.

Iskandar also urged regional governments to optimize coordination and cooperate with other regions for dealing with problems related to food.

He also asked the government to immediately find a solution so that the food supply can be maintained amid the hindrances faced in food distribution due to bad weather and high waves, especially in islands, frontier, and outermost regions.

"The government must immediately find a solution and ensure the food supply is safe," he said.

Earlier on Wednesday, head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorta Karnawati, urged citizens to remain alert for heavy rainfall, which has been predicted in a number of regions at year-end.

Based on an impact-based projection, half of Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara have been put on alert for heavy rainfall from December 28 to 30, 2022.

"These regions are estimated to experience heavy rain, which can cause hydrometeorological disasters in the form of floods and landslides," she said here on Wednesday.
