Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali and representatives of the National Sports Committee (KONI) introduced Aceh Province’s special mascot, logo, and tagline for the XXI/2024 Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON).

"Today, we launched Aceh region’s special mascot, logo, and tagline for the implementation of the Aceh-North Sumatra PON," he noted here on Saturday.

The province chose the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), which is locally called po meurah, as the mascot.

Meanwhile, rencong, which is a traditional Acehnese weapon, will be used as the logo, while the tagline is "United We Can Win."

The minister expects the launch event to encourage the people of Aceh to welcome the implementation of the 2024 Aceh-North Sumatra PON with joy and work together in ensuring the success of the national sporting event.

"Tomorrow, on Sunday (January 29, 2023), I will go to North Sumatra to carry out the same activity (launching North Sumatra’s special PON mascot, logo, and tagline)," he stated.

The minister remarked that the PON is scheduled to be inaugurated on September 8, 2024, in Aceh, while the closing ceremony will take place in North Sumatra on September 20, 2024.

Amali explained that later, countdown timers will be placed at several government offices and public spaces to remind the public of the implementation of the national sporting event.

He is optimistic that the government and all people of Aceh would manage to successfully host the 2024 PON.

“And (I also hope) all people, who come from various provinces (to compete in or watch the PON), will be impressed with Aceh,” he stated.

The launch event was started with a leisurely walk that was attended by thousands of residents of Aceh, including children, adults, and persons with disabilities.

Acehnese traditional Seudati dance performance as well as a lion dance show from the Aceh Regional Indonesian Lion Dance Sports Federation (FOBI) also enlivened the event.

Earlier, the North Sumatra Youth and Sports Office along with the Executive Committee for the Implementation of 2024 Aceh-North Sumatra PON had announced the winner of the PON theme song creation competition.

The title of the song is the same with the tagline, "United We Can Win." It was composed by Abi Nubli Qisthy from Medan City, North Sumatra Province.
