Jakarta (ANTARA) - Regional Director of the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM’s) Asia and the Pacific Office Sarah Lou Arriola has lauded the Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Protection Agency (BP2MI) for implementing several breakthroughs.

"BP2MI's support for PMIs (Indonesian migrant workers) is extraordinary. There have been many innovative and creative breakthroughs in providing services to PMIs," she remarked in a statement issued on Thursday evening.

During her visit to the BP2MI’s office on Thursday, she toured the office and praised the agency’s command center.

"The head of BP2MI (Benny Rhamdani) has protected and treated PMI in a special way, and certainly this is something to be very proud of,” the IOM regional director remarked.

She noted that one of the innovative measures applied by BP2MI has been issuing credentials for PMI.

“It (the issuance of PMI credentials) has not been implemented in other countries," she observed.

Furthermore, Arriola lauded other innovations carried out by BP2MI, including the provision of a special lounge for PMI.

"(Meanwhile) regarding the fast track (for migrant worker placement), it has been carried out in one or two (other) countries. Not all countries have readied it. I am touched by the attention of the BP2MI head to PMIs and laud BP2MI's work in serving PMI," she said.

Meanwhile, BP2MI head Rhamdani thanked her for visiting BPMI’s office.

He assured that his party will continue to carry out humanitarian duties, as instructed by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), in protecting the PMIs.

"BP2MI will continue to protect PMI. We provide three-aspect protection and BP2MI monitors all PMI in this command center,” he said.

The data compiled at the command center is official state data, Rhamdani added.

“BP2MI intensively carries out education and dissemination, thus we (all stakeholders) have the same spirit in treating PMIs in a special way," he said.

He also outlined a number of issues faced by the agency in protecting migrant workers, such as the illegal deployment of workers as well as violence against workers.
