They (platforms) must partner, negotiate with our media
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will introduce the Presidential Regulation (Perpres) on publishers' rights at the commemoration of 2023 National Press Day (HPN), according to an official from the Ministry of Communication and Informatics.

“At the 2023 HPN on February 9, the president, in his remarks, will introduce, will respond to the regulation draft (publishers' rights Perpres) that we have just handed to him,” the ministry’s Director General of Public Information and Communication, Usman Kansong, stated here on Tuesday.

Kansong made the statement at an international seminar, titled “Digital Disruption and Sustainable Media Ecosystems' Reorganization,” as monitored via the International Seminar and Press Councils Delegation YouTube channel.

According to Kansong, there are two substances in the publisher rights regulation, with the first being that platforms should cooperate with the media in Indonesia if they intend to spread news on their platforms.

"They (platforms) must partner, negotiate with our media," he emphasized.

He further noted that the negotiations are business-to-business in nature. Thus, press companies can negotiate individually with platforms or in groups through a mass media association.

Moreover, Kansong remarked that a supervisory institution will be in place to supervise if there is a dispute between the mass media and a certain platform.

Second, the presidential regulation on publisher rights will also give the Press Council the right to control, supervise, and mediate cooperation between platforms and media, as the government does not recommend forming a new special agency.

"Thus, we will use the existing agency, namely the Press Council," he remarked.

Earlier, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics on January 27, 2023, had submitted the Draft of Presidential Regulation on Publishers' Rights to President Jokowi to obtain permission to initiate the rights.

Kansong stated that if the ministry received the permission, it will then discuss the substances of the rights in further detail and involve relevant stakeholders.
