Jakarta (ANTARA) - The implementation of the World Water Forum (WWF) is among the important milestones for realizing the 2030 sustainable development goal (SDG) targets, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, has said.

“This forum, themed ‘Water for Shared Prosperity,’ can be considered as one of the most important milestones toward 2030 to achieve water security and contribute significantly to the realization of the SDGs," he said here on Thursday.

At the closing of the kick-off meeting of the 10th WWF, he invited all parties to jointly assess the challenges and strengths as well as explore the best options and approaches for addressing global water problems.

The assessment and exploration of those aspects should be carried out to bolster technological innovation, global cooperation, and information sharing as well as secure political commitment to ensure the sustainable management of water and sanitation, he added.

The coordinating minister, who is also chairperson of the national organizing committee for the WWF, said that global water demand has increased by 1 percent annually throughout the past decade.

Solutions, innovations, and action plans for tackling water problems will be discussed and sought through the process in the near future, he added.

The 10th WWF will be held in Bali from May 18 to 24, 2024.

Indonesia was chosen to host the 10th WWF after 30 out of 36 countries on the board of governors of the World Water Council voted in its favor at the 9th WWF in Dakar, Senegal, on March 19, 2022.

Earlier, Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said that Indonesia will focus on six issues at the 10th WWF.

The issues include water for humans and nature, water security and prosperity, disaster risk reduction and management, cooperation and hydro-diplomacy, water and innovative finance, as well as knowledge and innovation.
