Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment and Forestry Ministry has urged stakeholders to develop sustainable tourism management by considering aspects of the environment and people’s prosperity.

"We have to think about the health of the ecosystem and the sustainability of natural resources, including tourism objects," Environment and Forest Deputy Minister Alue Dohong said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

"We want the future generation to see the same thing and the same quality, much like the condition that we enjoy now," he added during a discussion on green investment for sustainable tourism development.

Multicultural local traditions and wisdoms can be strengthened to boost natural and cultural environment appeal management while also adjusting to international standards.

According to Dohong, sustainable tourism that is currently being implemented can be the backbone of Indonesia's economy.

This is important since, by 2045, when Indonesia celebrates 100 years of independence, the country is projected to become the fifth-largest economy in the world.

Through the G20 forum in Bali in 2022, the Indonesian government encouraged sustainable tourism in order to revive the local tourism and creative industry after the pandemic.

In fact, sustainable tourism is targeted to create up to three million jobs.

However, in Bali's tourism sector, in particular, there are often cases involving the transfer of ownership from local residents to foreign nationals, he highlighted.

He urged everyone to be wary of such cases. Tourism involves human mobility, thus it is vulnerable to the transfer of ownership, he explained.

He further informed that efforts made to achieve the sustainable tourism target will not proceed well if there are many obstacles from previously unplanned factors.
