Jakarta (ANTARA) - The endorsement of the domestic workers' protection (PPRT) bill as an initiative bill of the House of Representatives (DPR) marks a new chapter in the bill’s long journey to ratification, Presidential Staff Chief Moeldoko said.

The bill, which was introduced 19 years ago in 2004, was made a DPR initiative bill during the 19th plenary meeting of DPR's session IV on Tuesday.

"We appreciate and welcome the DPR RI plenary decision, which decided the PPRT Bill to become the DPR initiative bill, in accordance with the President's direction on January 18 regarding the urgency of the PPRT Bill. KSP (Presidential Staff Office), as part of the task force for the acceleration of the PPRT Bill, is ready to provide full support," Moeldoko said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The KSP is ready to provide full support to the Ministry of Manpower, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, and the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, as well as other stakeholders, to deepen and discuss the PPRT Bill together with DPR RI without delay, he added.

The PPRT Bill is needed to provide guarantees and legal certainty regarding the rights and obligations of domestic workers, Moeldoko explained.

The KSP also guarantees that collaborative efforts are being carried out so that the discussion on the PPRT Bill runs smoothly and the bill can be ratified soon, he added.

"The ratification of the PPRT Bill will be an important achievement in the protection and recognition of domestic workers. Besides that, formal recognition of domestic workers will also encourage an increase in women's economic contribution," he said.

Referring to the domestic workers' bill, which was proposed by the Legislative Body of the DPR RI on July 1, 2020, the bill contains material related to the recognition or acknowledgment of workers, a model for recruiting domestic workers, a model for protecting domestic workers, as well as setting the rights and obligations of workers.
