Jakarta (ANTARA) - The police has called on business owners and managers of nightlife venues, such as hotels and cafes in downtown of Jakarta, Setiabudi, to comply with the regulated operating hours during the Ramadan 1444 Hijri.

"We have conducted the dissemination of information and directly visited many nightlife venues in Setiabudi," Setiabudi Police Chief Commissioner Arif Purnama Oktora remarked here on Thursday.

He explained that some 24 entertainment venues in Setiabudi, ranging from discotheques, hotels and karaoke bars to cafes have expressed their commitment to abide by the rules during Ramadan.

"We carried out this activity with the sub-district, military, and police personnel," he remarked.

In addition to nightlife venues, Oktora said his side also visited several schools in the Setiabudi area to advise students to avoid brawls, suhoor (sahur) on the road, and join street convoys.

Oktora said his team also conducted an informative activity in the Epicentrum area to help maintain public order and safety during Ramadan.

"This is the agenda of the Greater Jakarta Police Chief to improve police performance in the community while increasing community participation in preventing public order and safety disturbances," he remarked.

Based on the circular issued by the Jakarta Economic and Creative Tourism Office concerning the implementation of tourism business during the Ramadan month and Eid al-Fitr, the government regulates the operating hours of nightlife venues that are part of four-star and five-star hotels.

Nightclubs, discotheques, and executive karaoke bars should only open from 8:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. local time, while saunas should only operate from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time; massage houses, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. local time; and entertainment centers, amusement arcades, and drinking bars, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. local time.

Family karaoke centers can remain open from 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. local time during Ramadan.

The police expects all nightlife establishments to follow the regulation to respect Muslims performing Ramadan worship.
