Although industrialization is often followed by significant increases in emissions, this country (Indonesia) has the potential to realize sustainable economic growth and play an important role in global decarbonization.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has the potential to set an example for other countries in realizing a sustainable, low-emissions economy for tackling the climate crisis, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has said.

Hence, the Indonesian government is striving to cooperate with a number of parties to support a number of energy transition plans to reduce emissions amid the government’s efforts to improve national welfare through industrialization, he added.

"Although industrialization is often followed by significant increases in emissions, this country (Indonesia) has the potential to realize sustainable economic growth and play an important role in global decarbonization," he said in a post on his personal Instagram account @luhut.pandjaitan on Friday.

The coordinating minister noted that one of the government’s efforts to realize the energy transition in Indonesia has been establishing a funding collaboration called the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

“It is the purpose of my visit to the United States this time: to meet with the United States (US) Special Presidential Envoy for Climate H.E (His Excellency) John Kerry,” he said.

“We want to convey to the US (government) again that last February, we officially launched the JETP Secretariat in Indonesia," he added.

He said that the JETP Secretariat will cooperate with other important stakeholders, both from the government and private sectors.

Through this collaboration, it will develop a Comprehensive Investment Plan (CIP) to prepare early retirement for fossil energy-fueled power plants, develop new and renewable energy (NRE), increase the energy value chain, as well as strengthen key policies, which can expedite the implementation of the plan.

The government will build more NRE transmission lines and networks, accelerate the development of NRE, and improve the value chain of NRE manufacturing in Indonesia to realize various energy transition targets that have been set as quickly as possible, he added.

"I have high expectations that our visit to America this time will be able to help expedite the reduction of carbon emissions in Indonesia as well as harmonize the growth and sustainability of this country's (Indonesia’s) economy," he added.
